Even if Your Hands are Shaking- Say What you Need to Say

Nothing haunts us like the things we don’t say. (Mitch Albom)

In 2007, I watched a movie called The Bucket List. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman set out on an epic quest around the globe to complete several things they want to see and do before dying. Throughout their journey, they learn lessons only seeing the other side of the world can teach while also uncovering words in their own lives that have been left unsaid.

The movie features John Mayer’s song, “Say”. I love the lyrics, “Even if your hands are shaking, and your faith is broken, do it…

Don’t Tire Out Before the Ones that Matter

Choose your battles wisely because if you fight them all, you’ll be too tired to win the really important ones.

When I think about going into battle, pictures of swords, horses, and armor fill my mind. I think about the physical process of getting ready and the mental stamina needed to prepare for what might be a grueling task.

It is okay not to fight in every battle you are invited to. Choosing not to engage does not count as a loss.

The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent. (Exodus 14:14)

Patience becomes Peace

When patience is being tested, remind yourself that you are merely uncomfortable. While waiting, there is typically little that can be done to speed time up.

However, there is a way to distract yourself by filling the time with something productive. Is there something you can read, listen to, practice, do, or notice when you are uncomfortable waiting?

  • What about listening to an audio book, song or podcast?
  • What about keeping a novel handy to read?
  • What about practicing mediation?
  • What about drinking an extra glass of water or a cup of tea?
  • What about saving a newspaper or magazine…

Happiness Has Always Been Inside Us

Photo by MI PHAM on Unsplash

I have come across the question, “Are you happy?” several times in the last few years in many situations. I remember first thinking [about how I would answer the question when I was teaching Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Clarrise, a girl of about 17, asks a Fireman if he is happy.

The fireman is confused by the question and not sure how to respond.

As I read this, I realized it might be reasonable to assume most people don’t consider the gravity of the question too often. …

Choosing to Inspire

Godfrey Robinson was 15 years old. He was hanging out with the wrong crowd. He and his friends were frequently bored. So bored that one day they decided to pass the time by throwing rocks at an ice-cream truck as it drove by.

The following day Robinson’s life changed.

The following day, the ice-cream man came back to ask Robinson why he threw rocks at his truck. Unsure of why and how to answer, the man with the ice-cream truck decided that Robinson needed a job and that he should come to work with him. …

Make Anytime Perfect

Don’t wait for someone to appear with your goals, don’t wait for January 1. Don’t wait for a “perfect time”.

Get to work today building the life you want. (Compete Every Day)

The “Perfect time” to do something never exists. There is always something that could be better.

Shakespeare said, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.”

I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. (Ezekiel 36:26) Start today.

One day you will look back and realize that today was a pretty perfect time to begin.

Ask the Question when You don’t Understand

I can still remember it. We were down by one, and the coach had called timeout, with 2 minutes on the clock. The five of us in game sat on the bleachers as the rest of the team huddled around to listen and watch a plan described on a clipboard. As the coach finished talking, I realized I was still confused about what I was supposed to do.

Slightly embarrassed, I realized that the only way I could help the team was to ask for the directions to be restated.

Without missing a beat, the coach went through the plan…
